Also called the Waggener House, the house was built in the late 1800's by local politician B.P. Waggener. The house is built like many older style houses in Atchison, except for the fact that gargoyles rest atop the house overlooking the town streets.
Legend states that Waggener sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his wealth, and in return erected the gargoyles as a testament to his pact with the devil himself.
It is also believed that because of this pact, the house is now cursed, and that anyone that tries to remove the gargoyles, dies. It is said that an owner of the home had once tried to remove the gargoyles from the home only to fall to his death. The gargoyles that typically used to ward off evil spirits, rest atop the house, seemingly unable to be removed.
Once again, we come to find that this Urban Legend is simply, just that. With no evidence to support the claims, we simply have a story that may or may not be true. In Folklore, Gargoyles are often seen as protective spirits, not as symbols of evil. If anything, the gargoyles were placed on top of the house as protection to the family within, not as a sign that a pact with the devil was made.
Regardless, the Waggener house is a staple for mysterious tales and spooky legends in the town of Atchison, and will remain as one of the many legendary local haunted spots.
